A toast, for the New Year and always

Flipping through an airline magazine while traveling last week, I ran across an ad for Grey Goose vodka which gave me cause to pause. It’s a “Toast List,” and is reprinted below.

Amazingly, though I’ve already misplaced the page I ripped from the Air Canada Enroute, I found it online, as  St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital had reprinted it in its entirety. Web research is an amazing thing — but that’s a separate column!

OK, the ad is schmaltzy, and it’s underlying message is to keep toasting (and with Grey Goose.) And yes, I admit I can tear up over a Hallmark commercial on TV, but this hit a different spot, a much deeper note.

In just a few words, it reminds me of the abundance I’ve shared with “those who matter most.” It reminds me of their faces and their laughter. It reminds me of the places we’ve seen together and the songs we’ve sung.

And its closing line is a reminder to appreciate them and celebrate them EVERY DAY, not just at the holidays….

But since it IS New Year’s Day, it feels right to post it here.

And since we are looking at a 2013 that seems full of uncertainty — of one thing, I am certain: that I have been blessed with the love of more than my share who certainly deserve this toast…. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!

To nearest
To dearest
To the crew
To cahoots
To the ones who’ve been there
To the ones who’ll be there
To dropping everything
To saying anything
To no judgments
To no doubts
To loyalty
To trust
To favors
To lifelongs
To been too long
To nothing’s changed
To having history
To having your back
To moving away
To never too far
To growing up
To settling down
To your second family
To friends

To celebrating the holidays with those who matter most

Thank you for gracing my life and for giving me so much. Here’s to a wonderful 2013, uncertainties and all.
